Summer Book Companions For Speech Therapy

Summer book companions for speech therapy

Summer Themed books to use in Speech Therapy

Popsicles, camping, beach time, and sharks! So many fun narrative themes to incorporate into our speech therapy activities during the summer months. You can read my other blog post with summer book suggestions and download the free language bookmarks. I went deeper with these 5 book companions. I’m giving you full, print-and-go lesson plans for implementing literacy-based speech therapy. They give you all the standards alignment, pre-reading strategies, story grammar, vocabulary, and post-reading activities.

I selected these books because they meet the following standards I keep in mind when implementing literacy-based speech therapy:

  1. It can be read in under 10 minutes
  2. It has a clear story grammar plot
  3. It includes great vocabulary
  4. Diverse characters are represented

A House For Hermit Crab by Eric Carle- I love how this book is organized. It’s perfect for sequencing as it goes throughout each month of the year, yet I still consider it a summer theme because it’s an ocean animal.

Over and Under The Pond by Kate Messner- A beautiful book about a young boy and mother canoeing on a pond and observing the ecosystem of animals and nature above and below the pond. I love that the main characters are diverse.
