Halloween is one of my favorite themes to celebrate in speech therapy. So many crafts, books, and ideas to incorporate! I have some great ideas to share with you of what I have planned for my little speech goblins.
My favorite Halloween book of all time is Room On The Broom by Julia Donaldson.
A witty story with clever rhyme that pleases my literacy soul. It is filled with fantastic vocabulary and an opportunity to discuss teamwork and helpfulness. You can work on recall by asking what fell off the witch and what animal came to help and the order of events. Vocabulary I love: wailed, bounded, eagerly, keen, clambered, fluttered, clutched, cloak, bounded, moors, bog, glint, squelched, muttered.
Other Halloween books I use are Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman, We’re Off To Find The Witches House by Mr. Krieb, and The Hallo-Wiener by Dav Pilkey (OMG...love this one!).
My students love crafts! I scored big at Michael’s...found these foam spider rings. $2.99 for 10 rings! But all the Halloween crafts are 60% off this week! I always incorporate crafts in one of two ways.
If they are an articulation student, they say a round or two of their words then get to complete a step in making it. If they are a language student, we work on sequencing or describing the craft, etc. These have been a big hit! Just a few steps and not messy.
My favorite resources are my candy corn themed articulation game boards. Click below for a closer look at everything included in these engaging activities!
Also, one of my holiday themed no prep Halloween! These are fun drill type pages with a cute picture for coloring on the side. I have my students say them twice in the speech room and take home for the third trial as homework.
